SMALL PALE BLUE ROMAN UNGUENTARIUM

Measurements: 7 cm –  height

 

Description: A small pale light blue unguentarium with a round body displaying two delicate constrictions at the base of the conical neck tapering in a folded, flattened rim. The item displays some iridescence. This unguentarium is made of poor quality glass, showing numerous small and medium bubbles. Blue-green colour was achieved by adding copper oxides to the glass while in furnace.

Period: 2nd - 3rd cent. AD

 

Condition: Very fine, intact surface with some iridescence and encrustations. The body of this vessel has been repaired – a hairline crack is visible on one side and in the middle of the bottom of the vessel and there is a small chip to the surface.
