SMALL BYZANTINE CROSSES
Measurements: item A: 4.6 cm − height, 2.7 cm − width, item B: 3.7 cm − height, 1.8 cm − width
Description: A pair of intact Byzantine bronze crosses, both decorated on one side and unworked on the other, with suspension loops at the top. Item A displays an attractive dark olive-green patina, and is decorated by a cross-shaped incision with an incised ring decoration at the centre. Its suspension loop has been repaired and reattached to the cross in antiquity. Item B is decorated by a cross-shaped incision on the face, and a rib on the suspension loop. In the Byzantine Empire the cross came to represent the crucifixion and the promise of salvation and everlasting life, and thus the symbol was incorporated into many different forms of jewellery and worn by both the poor and the wealthy. Condition: Item A is very fine, suspension loop repaired in antiquity, attractive olive-green patina over the whole. Item B is very fine, intact, light patina over the whole.
