Western Asiatic Pair of Gold Earrings with Granules

£ 950.00

An exquisite pair of Western Asiatic solid high-karat gold earrings. The body of the earrings features a crescent, penannular shape expanding at the ridge at the centre. The earrings are adorned with three granule clusters arranged in a pyramidal shape. At the centre, a large cluster of five big pellets each decorated with three smaller granules, forms an elegant design resembling hanging flowers or fruit. Smaller clusters of four granules are placed on the sides of the crescent, each mirrored across the earring. Two additional single granules decorate the crescent terminal. The earrings would have originally featured a hinged style clasp, evidenced by the perforated loops on one end of each earring.

This earring design, originating in the Western Asiatic region, became extremely popular across a variety of ancient cultures including Etruscan, Greek, Roman, Parthian and Sasanian.

Weight includes both earrings.

Many grand civilizations inhabited the area of Western Asia in Antiquity, and their wealth and prosperity are witnessed by the very sophisticated precious metal crafting of jewellery. Gold would have been hammered down to a thin layer and manipulated into different shapes. Gold and silver jewellery would have featured gold granules, glass and semi-precious stone inlays and detailed engravings. Very fine granulation, along with filigree, were at the centre of Western Asiatic jewellery production and were later adopted by the Greeks, Etruscans and Romans.
