In Ancient Roman mythology and culture Diana, or Artemis to the Greeks, was the powerful goddess of the hunt and of childbirth, often associated with wild spaces and with the animals. Appliques like this were attached to larger items, like horse tack, chariots, domestic items or jewellery boxes.
