ROMAN GOLD AND GARNET EARRINGS

Description: A delicate pair of Late Roman gold wire earrings with garnets and glass beads. The gold wires have been twisted into cloverleaf shapes, alternating with straight posts adorned with dark glass beads to create a wonderful openwork motif.  A deep red garnet cabochon has been set in the centre.  The earrings have original ancient hooks that have been pushed in and new modern gold hooks have been added so that they can be suitable for modern wear.

 

Provenance: Ex. Mayfair gallery, London. Prior: private collection, New York, 1970s.

 

Period: 3rd – 4th cent. AD

 

Condition: Very fine, intact, slight nicks to the gold and minor encrustations.
