Romans inherited the use of filigree and granulation, two of the most sophisticated goldsmith metalworking techniques, from the Etruscans. Both techniques are in fact previous to the Etruscans, as the first jewellery samples featuring both granulation and filigree have been recovered in Mesopotamia, dating back to around 3000 BC.
