A finely modelled Ancient Roman gold intaglio ring with a D-shaped loop which meets at a finely crafted bezel, set with a black engraved hardstone, possibly obsidian. The engraved image it that of a donkey, seemingly mid step, rendered in a naturalistic style, together with a little mouse. An endearing piece, highlighting the simple charm of everyday Roman life. UK ring size M. Weight: 3.5g.

 

Date: Circa 1st-4th century AD.
Condition: Good condition. Crack to the intaglio and signs of aging to the surface.
