Frogs

Frogs appear as symbolic creatures in many cultures. In Ancient Egypt, their association with the Nile, which was essential to agriculture, was such that frogs came to be associated with fertility. Somewhat similarly, in Greek and Roman culture, frogs were associated with Aphrodite and accordingly with fertility and licentiousness. Additionally, in Greek fables; in Aristophanes’ comic play The Frogs; and in the Batrachomyomachia (a mock parody of the Iliad where frogs battle mice), frogs appear as mock humans, parodying debate, politics and war.
