Linear Pattern

A Linear pattern refers to a design which features parallel lines forming bands. Such patterns may be found on jewellery and are also common in ceramics, where the use of the pottery wheel lends itself to easily design linear patterns on a rounded pottery form. Such decoration, due to its simplicity, is commonly the first style of decoration of pottery such as with Greek pottery from the Geometric Period. Such linear patterns can be used as border devices between different scenes or may themselves be embellished as is the case of the Geometric Period, whereby a variety of patterns form linear patterns or bands across the item.
