Sgraffito is a decorative technique that uses scratched marks that show the lower levels of the material, thereby creating a contrast in colour and texture. Technically, this can be obtained with layers of clay or ceramics, or even using layered paints. The word is originally from Italian (to scratch) and Greek (to write). The sgraffito technique features on some of our ancient pots, bowls and pottery.
