Large Luristan Bronze Lanceolate Blade

£ 950.00

A very fine Luristan bronze blade featuring a wide, lanceolate shape. The metalwork is highly sophisticated; the planes of the blade feature ridges and curves to make the blade lighter and stronger. The shoulders slope gently upwards into the edges of the blade that taper gradually to a rounded tip, creating a lanceolate, or leaf-shaped, form. A central midrib is formed of two ridges, which curve steeply from the forte, running parallel up the blade, and meet roughly 3½ inches from the tip. A short tang stems from the base of the blade, to which a hilt would have been attached. The piece features an attractive deep green patination with some orange colouration on one edge.

This piece does not come accompanied by a stand. Stands are available upon inquiry.

Date: Circa 1800-600 BC
Condition: Very good. Some minor wear to the edges of the blade, as consistent with age.

Luristan bronze comes from the province of Lorestan, renowned in antiquity for its sophisticated metal working techniques. Due to the nomadic nature of the populations that settled in the area, none of the Luristan bronzes were of great size, since it was required for them to be light and portable. Excavated items most often included weapons, tools, vessels and finials, but ornamental pieces such as amulets, fittings and jewellery, such as pins or bracelets, also feature in the material record. Archaeological evidence suggests that Luristan bronze objects often served ceremonial functions, given their funerary contexts, and there are recurring artistic motifs of flora and fauna and the human relationship to each throughout their work.
