Oil lamps were extremely popular household items that were used throughout many ancient civilizations and in Rome they found their apix in decoration. Extremely widespread, oil lamps had to be filled with oil and a wick in order to work and this type of tool would have enabled the user to get the burned bits of the wicks out of the lamp and to scrape off oily sediments.
Ancient Roman Bronze Hook
An interesting Ancient Roman bronze hook-and-spike, composed of a pointed body, a hole to the rounded end of the stem, and two hooks. The additional hook close to the end of the stem was probably used as an oil lamp-cleaning tool in Antiquity. Part of the original chain still attached.
